When I left University in 1987 I joined the corporate advisory division of a leading investment bank.  After three years I decided that selling the deals I was working on was where I wanted to be.  So I rang Michael Sandler to ask for a job.  That was in 1990 and I have enjoyed working at Hudson Sandler ever since. Deals have included over 20 IPOs as well as advising on many of the highest profile M&A transactions of recent years.  And I am proud to have built long term relationships with a portfolio of retained clients where we always strive to deliver new perspectives and original thinking.  We continue to win great quality new business with the new challenges that I relish. The speed of change across the media gets faster and faster and more and more interconnected, making our enormous experience even more relevant as clients seek to cut through all the noise. And of course, the challenges and opportunities this creates makes our role ever more fascinating and important to commercial success.

After graduating from Boston University, I practiced as a Chartered Surveyor before joining the far more exciting world of financial public relations in 1980. I became a director of Streets Financial, which did so well that just six years later, I left to co-found Hudson Sandler. The world has changed many times since 1986, but I have continued to enjoy the cut and thrust of financial PR - advising a wide range of companies and City institutions as well as working on numerous takeovers, listings and fund raisings. Every day I thank my lucky stars I had the good sense to get out of surveying.

Working for more than 20 years as a journalist in regional and national newspapers I interviewed a fascinating range of people from Luciano Pavarotti to Bill Gates. As a business journalist I had a front row seat at the City’s Big Bang and the privatisations of the 1980s and 1990s to the bank bailouts and regulatory changes following the 2008 financial crisis. I crossed to the Dark Side in 2010 and joined Hudson Sandler for the first time, before spending five years at MHP Communications. I provide UK and international listed and private businesses with advice ranging from financial calendar and M&A activity to reputation and crisis management and, of course, media training for a rapidly changing media world. The Hudson Sandler I returned to has evolved, but the familiar culture of innovation, excellence and collaboration mean it is very much like coming home.

An Oxford degree in English led to four years as an account man in advertising where I learnt the art of the possible as well as how to book the best restaurant tables. However, the City called and I quickly became immersed in an exciting world of hostile bids, mergers ,crisis management, fund raisings and IPOs. The City has changed in many ways over the last few years with both the media and City institutions facing particular challenges from the ever evolving development of the internet and changing regulation respectively. However, there is still a role for the PR advisor who has the experience, and black book developed over the years, to guide and counsel clients in this fast changing world. It is very satisfying to still be advising companies I first met 20 years ago as well as building on the good relationships with young journalists and City advisers who now occupy lofty positions throughout the City. The job is constantly evolving but I believe the key attributes of a PR man remain the same: creative thinking, common sense, perseverance and a strong constitution.

Growing up, my dream was to be a writer.  However, when I was old enough to understand the precarious financial nature of this career choice, I decided to think again and follow a route that would allow me to write, engage with the media and exercise my skill for forensic analysis. And after 25 years in the communications industry, supporting leading UK and global brands, I can honestly say that I made the right choice. I have developed a specialism in creating strategies that help companies rebuild their reputations following significant challenges or widespread criticism of an entire industry sector. I have extensive experience of managing short-term crises and work across a broad range of industry sectors including financial services, healthcare, pharmaceutical, retail, defence, mining and manufacturing.  Over the years, I have seen the problems companies face change significantly and now work extensively on issues involving sustainability, supply chain risks, human rights, corporate governance and taxation. The work can be complex, challenging but it’s never dull. And, whether it’s a submission to a government select committee or public inquiry, statement around high profile litigation or an annual sustainability report, I have plenty of opportunity to write to a daily basis.

Having worked heroically for my ACA qualification at PricewaterhouseCoopers, I perhaps somewhat rashly jettisoned my accountancy career to make the move in to financial communications.  However, my accountancy training has naturally been of use in navigating my way through financial statements, analyst models and legal documents but I now no longer have the joys of audit working papers and four to six week stints in basement offices of industrial business parks.  I recently joined Hudson Sandler after 13 years at Bell Pottinger and 3 years at The Communication Group. My experience is largely in capital markets communications. I’ve advised a range of businesses from FTSE 100s through to AIM small caps and pre-IPO companies.  I’ve worked across most sectors but have a particular leaning towards consumer-facing businesses and businesses going through change.

The advantage of a psychology degree is that you know what the interviewer is thinking before he does. This anticipatory skill baffled Andrew into giving me a job at Hudson Sandler and has kept me out of trouble ever since. I now work across a wide range of Hudson Sandler accounts, advising clients in the property, technology, leisure, financial services, and retail sectors. I obviously don’t miss my original calling, since I’ve now been in the financial PR business for over 20 years (ouch).

After three years studying philosophy at Bristol University (when cricket commitments allowed, of course) I took a Masters degree in Finance & Management, graduating with impeccable timing in the immediate aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis.  Impressed by an enviable client list and fantastic culture I was instantly sold on a career in communications at Hudson Sandler. My primary focus is advising companies the consumer industries and working with brands in telling their stories and managing increasingly scrutinised reputations across stakeholders. My biggest thrill remains the feeling that I’m genuinely part of my clients’ businesses and, from that position, giving real value-added advice.  All this in an always dynamic, collaborative and thoughtful environment amongst people who don’t take themselves too seriously, but are relentlessly client-centric.

A self confessed ‘media junkie’, my City PR life started in 1997 in the corporate PR department of Square Mile Communications working on the agency’s large professional services clients. To keep up with the dotcom masses, I left to become a founding Director of Citywebwatch, a leading financial news service. Having enjoyed the front line of financial media, I returned to PR to join Abchurch Communications, where I spent five and a half years managing financial, media and investor relations programmes for clients, in addition to working on a wide range of ECM transactions and special situations. As a Director, I also led the agency’s media relations practice. I was drawn to Hudson Sandler by the type of businesses the agency represents and the encouraging fact that these clients and my Hudson Sandler colleagues very rarely part company.

I started my career after University as a journalist in Moscow where I worked for a number of publications including Izvestia and Forbes. At that time Russia was exploring the frontiers of capitalism and the natural resources sector – especially with my focus on the two “sexiest” areas, oil and diamonds – was the place to be and it helps me a lot on my current work. My many Russian clients appreciate my familiarity with the country, its language and its customs. Our investor relations programmes build on this expertise and our appreciation of the increasing influence of the CIS countries and their rapidly expanding economy.
